18 Best Movie Elves That Are Now Iconic

When you hear Elves, what is the first image that comes to your mind? Is it Legolas from Lord of the Rings or Elrond from the same franchise? Well, you are not totally wrong, they both are elves, but there are way more levels in the movies that might have slipped past your radar.

Across the depiction of mythology in the film, the elves had many variations, and the depiction of the elves totally depended on the place, culture, era, and timeline. Some elves are short and colorful with big pointed ears, but some are beautiful, tall, and supernatural creatures from a mystical space who reside forever with the means of nature.

Irrespective of whichever form they are in, they play a significant figure in the fantasy setup inside the movies, and their portrayal in the movies plays a major aid in the picturization of their respective mythologies. From full-blown fantasy movies to Christmas specials, these mythological beings of magic have continuously thrilled, charmed, and enchanted the cinema for decades.

Very recently, we saw Rings of Power, which is from the house of The Lord of the Rings. It is a fantasy world where elves play an important role in the storyline. The depiction of elves in the series provokes the fandom to think that the portrayal of the elves is still based on those old, outdated ideas.

Not just the elves from the series, there are many other elves in the movies like Onward from Pixar and other movies in which elves have a small screen time, but a major role like elves from Harry Potter movies. In this list, we will take a look at various elves across the movies, their depiction, portrayals, and the setup they have been used in.

Elf

The movie was released in 2003, and we saw the character of Buddy the elf, played by Will Ferrell. It only seems right to give Buddy an honorable mention, as he is an honorary elf. Buddy may be a large fish in a tiny pond, but he nevertheless exudes the happiness and goodwill of 10 of Santa’s elves, and he ultimately succeeds in rescuing Christmas.

Elf

Elf

That’s still a stunning accomplishment, even by human standards. Santa’s elves have a part in Elf, a movie that depends on parodying cliches from classic Christmas movies. However, Will Ferrell’s Buddy is as outrageous and upbeat as any Rankin/Bass movie, easily earning him a seat in the Christmas hall of fame despite the fact that the elves are primarily stereotypes in terms of look.

It was a light movie with a Christmas theme on board. It may sound a bit too much, but for me, this was one of the best, if not the best, performances by Will Ferrell. He filled the shoes of the character so well, which uplifted the movie in its own terms. The journey that Buddy took to find his biological father was well represented and was also loved by the audience.

Krampus

Krampus was released in 2015, and the character of Max was played by Emjay Anthony. Even while elves are magical beings, not all of them are endearing and kind, as evidenced by these masked Krampus minions. The antithesis of St. Nicholas, Krampus is known as the “Shadow of Saint Nicholas.” He must thus have some altered copies of Santa’s elves.

Krampus

Krampus

These men are a long cry from the jolly, candy-coated elf of the holiday season. Krampus’s minions immediately distinguish themselves from some of their colleagues by using a much older spell. Their masks and weapons give them a Nordic and tribal appearance, which is a fascinating departure from the usual narrative.

In the movie, you will see Max getting frustrated by his family because of some contest, and as a result, he loses interest in celebrating Christmas. So he decides to wake a demon named Krampus and get revenge on his family.

There are many enjoyable aspects to this movie. Between the hilarious characters, the truly terrifying creatures, and the outstanding character development. I like this blend of horror incorporating the holiday season, and Krampus is a fantastic Christmas horror movie to watch at any time.

All the other Christmas monsters and animals were a great addition to the movie, and they gave the audience something else to focus on while they were waiting for Krampus to appear towards the conclusion.

The Dark Crystal

The Dark Crystal came out in 1982. There were two elves in the movie, and the characters of Jena and Kira were played by Jim Henson and Lisa Maxwell. There is no doubt that Jim Henson’s elves are pointy-eared creatures of Thra and are elven in arrangement, construction, and makeup, despite going by the name Gelfling. Both the OG Dark Crystal and its prequel show Gelflings have a lot in common with conventional high-fantasy elves.

The Dark Crystal

The Dark Crystal

However, Jen and Kira from the first Dark Crystal are deserving of special recognition. Both individuals stand for various interpretations of the archetype. It’s obvious that Henson did his research before constructing his fantasy world and its inhabitants by using Jen as a long-haired lead character versed in the mystic arts and Kira as the spirit of nature.

Jim Henson did an amazing job in forming the characters, and that led to a good delivery of the plot. The special effects were excellent given the timeframe of the film’s development, and I believe it has become a masterpiece that both adults and children would enjoy viewing. A true fantasy film that stirs emotions and undoubtedly sparks the imagination.

Thor: The Dark World

Thor: The Dark World was released in 2013 and is the second installment in the Thor movie franchise. The character of Thor is played by Chris Hemsworth in Thor movies and all the MCU movies.

But as we are talking about elves in this article, let’s talk about Malekith and the dark elves. Elves aren’t just found in fantasy literature, as anyone who has watched the Thor series would attest. But compared to the normal elf, these creatures from Svartalfheim are very much exotic.

Thor The Dark World

Malekith

They are one of the oldest species in the Marvel timeline, having emerged from the gaping vacuum at the beginning of time. What sets them apart from the others is their unique blend of magic and technology. The violent race of primordial invaders known as the Dark Elves, who are opposed to the Asgardians and are led by Malekith, is seen in the second Thor movie, The Dark World.

They are most definitely a unique representation of the species, even though they don’t fit with the creatures of Alfheim in the original legend.  The movie received a mixed reaction from the audience. If you are a fan of Marvel Movies, then you should definitely have a look at this movie, as it is a core movie that plays a bigger part in the overall MCU plot.

Harry Potter

I don’t think one needs any introduction to Harry Potter movies. J.K. Rowling wrote the novels, and the movies are based on her novel, Harry Potter. The first Harry Potter movie was released in 2011, and the whole franchise ran for almost ten years.

There are seven movies in the franchise. The House Elves in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter are several spell casters slaves in the Harry Potter novels and films, a far cry from their normally noble image in most fantasy.

Dobby The House Elf

Dobby, The House Elf

However, the majority of viewers who have seen the series are familiar with Dobby and his fervent loyalty. The character of Dobby was played by Toby Jones and was known as Dobby the House Elf. Dobby is possibly one of Harry’s most guarded friends and companions, despite his slip-ups. In order for the group to get away from Bellatrix Lestrange, he disobeys his master, puts his life in danger, and even puts himself on the line.

Wands were undoubtedly lifted in support of this underdog since he was a tragic yet revered person and died to save Harry. One should definitely watch Harry Potter, no matter what age group one belongs to. It will take you on a magical ride with a good fantasy story, great supporting music, and good performances by all the star cast.

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army

Hellboy 2: The Golden Army came out in 2008 and is the second installment of the Hellboy movie. The role of Hellboy is played by Ron Perlman. The character of elves, Prince Nuada, is played by Luke Goss. In most fantasies, elves are stereotyped in a specific way.

They should have a tall, blonde, and majestic appearance. But Guillermo Del Toro’s elves defy convention, evolving into a prehistoric race of supernatural creatures with a viscerally menacing air.

Hellboy 2 The Golden Army

Hellboy 2 The Golden Army

They are tall and blonde, but their look is considerably more vampirized and has an organic, prehistoric feel about it. But most significantly, they share the same distinctiveness and peculiar beauty as all of Del Toro’s previous works. It was a comic, enjoyable, action-packed, well-written movie. The tale may turn out to be predictable right away.

But I watched this movie for that, not to find out how Prince Nuada can awaken The Golden Army or what difficulties he will encounter in the two hours of entertaining action. Del Toro did a good job with the movie, and all the other actors did well to complement his vision of the story on the big screen. As mentioned, it is a fun watch, so you should definitely watch this movie.

Lord of the Rings [Arwen]

The first Lord of the Rings movie was released in 2001, and the franchise lasted for three movies. The movie franchise is based on a novel of the same name, written by J. R. R. Tolkien. There were multiple characters of elves in the movie series.

In this post, we will discuss Arwen, who was played by Liv Tyler. The enduring fantasy series effectively established the stereotype with characters like the enchanted people of Rivendell and the enigmatic Wood Elves of Mirkwood, who are, in fact, the smartest and prettiest of their kind.

Arwen

Arwen

Arwen plays one of the saga’s most important supporting roles as the everlasting love of Aragorn and the daughter of King Elrond. She is in charge of saving the Hobbits from the Nazgul’s grasp in the movies, among other heroic deeds that elevate her status from that of the novels.

It was a total sight to see her performance in the movie; the way she managed to uplift the character was very well done. I am sure you will fall in love with her and her heroics in the movie. If you wanna talk about the movie, it was magical, full of action-packed scenes and some sparkling, funny scenes here and there, which makes it a complete package.

The movie may look a bit slow, but it is what you expect from a movie that is being adapted from a novel. If you have no time to read the novel, then you should defiantly have a look at the movie. A new show from Amazon is also released, known as The Rings of Power which is a prequel to the movie.

Lord of the Rings [Galadriel]

Lord of the Rings movies is based on the novels written by J. R. R. Tolkien. There were three movies in the franchise, and all of them were very well received by the audience. Alongside Arwen, there was also Galadriel, who was an elf. Cate Blanchett was the actress who filled the shoes of Galadriel in the franchise. Arwen may be a stunning young woman, but Galadriel exudes elegance with every fiber of her being.

Galadriel

Galadriel

In Tolkien’s writing, the Lady of the Golden Wood is a great representation of an ethereal elf queen since she exudes such incredible magical power. She is practically a natural force in her own right because she is a well-known, strong entity in Middle-Earth.

The idealized elven figure is represented by Galadriel, a strong, almost spiritual creature who shines like a beacon in a world full of humans and monsters.

Compared to others, a touch cliched but unquestionably a very well-known character from the War of the Ring. Cate did a magnificent job with her expression and delivery. It was a movie filled with an amazing star cast, and all of them did a good job in playing their respective roles.

Lord of the Rings [Elrond]

There were many elves in the Lord of the Rings, and among Arwen and Galadriel, there was Elrond as well. The character of Elrond was played by Hugo Weaving. The way he managed to make the character alive was well done, and his character was also very well written. Middle-king earth’s Elrond has been involved in the One Ring story ever since Sauron‘s finger was severed from it.

Elrond

Elrond

He wins a position in the hearts of many fantasy lovers, both inside and outside Rivendell, thanks to his dual roles as a fearless leader and magical tutor. Despite his deep suspicion of people, he was always ready to lend a hand, provide hospitality, and impart great knowledge to anyone who sought him out.

He even went so far as to welcome thirteen dwarfs and their hobbit buddy inside his castle and help them on their journey. He is obviously an ally that any party would like to know. The way he managed to blend in with the characters is something to see in the movie, plus he also plays a core role in the motion of the plot.

  • Released in: 2001
  • IMDB Score: 8.8

Lord of the Rings [Legolas]

If you have seen the movie, you already know who Legolas is, and I am sure that you are already a fan of his. The character of Legolas was played by Orlando Bloom, and he did a good job of playing the character. If we talk about Legolas, although he is not the strongest or most supernatural creature on the list, Legolas is the elf that most people are familiar with.

Legolas

Legolas

He resembles the prototypical elf warrior in nearly every way, including the long flowing blonde hair, enormous pointed ears, skill with an arrow, and green tunic. Fans adore him for this. He is a skilled archer with a bow, an adept navigator of diverse terrains, and a dependable, esteemed, and adored soldier of the Fellowship of the Ring.

A quick rogue is necessary for any decent adventure party, and Legolas more than meets the requirement. The action sequences in the movie focusing on Legolas were so fast-paced and exciting to see. His makeup, weapons, and overall attire were well depicted, which made him even more appealing.

Ella Enchanted

Ella Enchanted was released in 2004, and the character was played by Anne Hathway. It is a retelling of Cinderella loosely based on the book that has the same name. Ella is a young woman who makes friends with the oppressed elves and giants of the realm while attempting to reverse a curse placed upon her by a fairy godmother.

Slannen was the elf that was seen in the movie, and the character was portrayed by Aidan McArdle’s Slannen is one of these elves, and in contrast to the traditional mysticism surrounding the species, he is only interested in becoming a lawyer.

Ella Enchanted

Ella Enchanted

The elves in Ella Enchanted resemble Christmas elves more due to their modest stature and green attire than the tall, acrobatic elves that predominate action fantasy. They nevertheless always manage to step up and play the hero when Ella is in difficulty, which was something the audience expected from him. It is a typical prince-princess movie, and your expectations should be in check.

Aidan did a great job in making the character alive on the screen, and Anne Hathway has always charmed the screen with her presence and performance. You will also find a message behind the movie. Ella had a good heart no matter if the tide was against her; it was also good to see her expressing her views to the people. It is a good watch if you want to pass the time.

The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe

The Chronicles Of Narnia is a franchise that has three movies. The first installment, The Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe, came out in 2005. There is no disputing that The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe gave the Chronicles of Narnia series a good start, even though it lost steam in the following years.

Elves are only one of the numerous races that seek Aslan to lead them out of the harsh endless winter of the White Witch in this captivating fantasy film, which is packed with wondrous animals.

The Chronicles Of Narnia

The Chronicles Of Narnia

Goat-footed fauns and centaurs make up the majority of the creatures that the children encounter after entering the wardrobe, which is where The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe mostly focus on the other races. The elves of Narnia, however, will be easy to identify due to their lofty size and noble character. The novel has been brilliantly adapted into this film.

The magical creatures, the four Pevensie Children, the land of Narnia, and everything else that is adapted from the source material and brought to life in live action are all depicted just as you would picture them to be.

Tilda Swinton, in especially, provides a fantastic performance and really controls the role of the evil, the white witch. Every performer suits their character so incredibly well. She may be one-dimensional and just interested in ruling the world, but she is unquestionably a terrible foe.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug

The Hobbit movie franchise is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings Movies. There were three movies in the Hobbit lineup and The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, which came out in 2013 in the second installment.

Even a team of dwarves and their hobbit thief in The Desolation of Smaug find the woodland of Mirkwood to be perilous, as the group is soon overrun by ravenous spiders. Tauriel and the well-known Legolas arrive to the rescue, leading a group of Wood-elves to repel the spiders.

The Hobbit The Desolation Of Smaug

The Hobbit The Desolation Of Smaug

The Wood-elves of Mirkwood imprison the dwarves and require Bilbo to devise a plan of escape for them despite the fact that the elves of Middle-earth are known for being intelligent and honorable. It appears that no one informed them of this.

Elves are ultimately one of the most interesting races to see in Middle-earth, even when they are the antagonists. Out of all the Hobbit movies, it best evokes the wonder of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, especially in the scene with Smaug and the genuinely unsettling Spider sequence.

It progresses far more quickly than Parts 1 or 3 and brings together numerous tangled, disjointed plot lines from Unexpected Journey into a more cohesive whole. Additionally, it significantly improves the Sauron sub-plot over Journey’s bloated teasing and Battle’s pathetically inadequate resolution. Martin Freeman, Ian McKellen, and Richard Artimage deliver strong performances, and the CGI is also significantly enhanced.

Onward

Pixar’s Onward came out in 2020; in the movie, we saw Ian Lightfoot as an elf, and he was voiced by Tom Holland, and the other character was Barely Lightfoot, voiced by Chris Pratt. Onward regrettably ended up going under the radar just a little bit, at least to the extent that a Pixar film can slide under the spotlight because it was released in a year when the pandemic was forcing movies to perform poorly, and the Academy Award-winning Soul was released.

Onward

Onward

However, it’s difficult to dislike the movie’s touching story about two elf brothers Ian and Barely, who set out to bring their father back to life for only one day.

The movie clearly situates its elf characters in the realm of fantasy with their blue complexions, blue hair, and enormous pointed ears, yet this is contrasted with their everyday modern attire. Onward imparts several poignant life lessons about maturing, sibling relationships, and what it’s like to lose a loved one.

In the fantasy realm of Onward, Ian Lightfoot, a young teenage elf who is worried, unhappy, and courteous, struggles with social confidence in the outside world and with growing because he has no father because he has died. Onward is funny, uplifting, and brilliant, the animation was good, and the storytelling with the plot and characters is also something that you will like.

The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies

The Hobbit lineup of movies is a prequel to the Lord of the Rings Movies. There were three films in the Hobbit franchise and The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies, which came out in 2014 in the final installment. The confrontation between Thranduil and his army of Mirkwood elves and Thorin, which threatens to end them all as evil armies approach the mountain, is a key part of the Hobbit trilogy’s dramatic conclusion.

The Hobbit The Battle Of The Five Armies

The Hobbit The Battle Of The Five Armies

The Battle of the Five Armies is a fantastic elven movie, despite the fact that both sides’ intransigence makes it tough to root for them. One of the things is getting to watch the graceful and acrobatic elves engage in fighting once more when Legolas and Tauriel join in after she successfully persuades the younger Legolas that they must fight.

There are several reasons why The Hobbit ranks as the finest of the Hobbit films, with elegant combat being one of its strong features. Among all the Hobbit trilogy, this is the most surprising and intriguing movie because everything finally makes sense and fits together.

Once more, everything hits you like any heavy object you can imagine, including the musical scores, the narrative, the settings, the outright brutality that everyone displayed, the answers to my earlier questions, the heartbreaking events that occur, and even the mention of other characters from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, came out in 1964. It makes sense that several movies based and themed on Christmas would make the cut, given that this list is entirely about elves. We must not forget everyone’s favorite reindeer, Rudolph, and his sidekick and best friend, Hermey the Elf, both misfits and each one exceptional in their own way.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

In Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, after being expelled from reindeer training, Rudolph is shamed and alone in the world until he meets the charming Hermey, a Christmas elf who secretly wants to be a dentist.

The two quickly develop a close friendship and support one another in realizing that their individuality is what makes them great, leading to one of the best family-friendly Christmas movies. In the future, Rudolph drives Santa’s sleigh on Christmas Eve.

I thought the stop-motion elements in the story were done quite nicely. And Rankin Bass employees did a phenomenally talented job on this. As Sam the snowman, Burl Ives was and continues to be a legend. As Rudolph’s voice, Billie Mae Richards did a fantastic job. Even the characters are intriguing and believable.

Prep And Landing

The movie came out in 2009, and there were two elves in the movie, Wayne and Lanny, voiced by Dave Foley and Dereck Richardson. The film contrasts two elves who approach their Christmas work in diametrically opposed ways, and Wayne is the one who lacks the essential holiday cheer. He is ready for a promotion after more than 200 days of working as an elf because he is tired of his current position.

Prep And Landing

Prep And Landing

Wayne becomes friends with Lanny after he is placed with a rookie elf instead and begins to warm up to him to the point where he declines his long-awaited promotion in order to continue working with him. This is how Wayne learns the significance of the season. I absolutely love this movie. It’s an old favorite that starts the season each time you put it on and makes you happy.

It is PG and adorable for a party, sleepover, movie night, and movie marathon, and however, some bad words are used with Christmas terminology. I really like this movie, and it would make a wonderful present for children.

Arthur Christmas

Arthur Christmas came out in 2011, and the role of the elf was played by Ashley Jensen. The story follows Santa Claus’s son Arthur as he travels on Christmas Eve to give a youngster a lost gift that an elf named Bryony Shelley found.

Bryony, who plays the only significant female character in the movie, is a tough elf with a knack for gift-wrapping and throws around her Scottish accent as she goes on an expedition with Arthur to deliver the forgotten gift.

Aurthur Christmas

Arthur Christmas

When Arthur is chosen as the next Santa, Bryony, who has only previously worked in the Wrapping Division of Santa’s workshop, is promoted to Vice-President of Packing due to her tenacity. This film is a gem that is underrated. It appears to be your average tacky, corny holiday film, yet it has a lot of heart and even has some gorgeous scenes.

The main themes of family and giving are the film’s focus, which is on the actual magic of Christmas. Yes, it contains some of the usual silly, infantile gags.
