The 7 Best Publishable Nations in EU4 – FandomSpot

There are many nations in the game that are not directly playable on the nation selection screen.

These usually represent polities and empires that only ceased to exist in 1444.

These nations begin with cores in the territory they rightfully consider theirs. In many cases, they also have unique national ideas and even mission trees! Some have unique achievements associated with them, although these can be unlocked through later release.

You can use these nations in two ways:

You can of course choose to play as them if you wish. But the harder way is to release them as vassals and use their cores to conquer large chunks of rival nations for little to no aggressive expansion.

So, without further ado, let’s see what nations lie hidden within EUIV, waiting to be released!

7. Syria

Syria opens the list as one of the standout nations used to conquer your rivals’ land with little to no aggressive expansion.

With generic Arabic ideas and no unique missions, Syria isn’t a nation you’d play in often. Unless you really, really like the location on the map or live there I guess.

Who am I to judge?

Syria’s power lies in its core provinces.

It is enough to conquer a province in the first war to liberate the nation. Then, in the ensuing war against whoever controls the territory (usually the Mamluks or the Ottomans), you simply retake the whole country in the name of Syria!

6. Bulgaria

Bulgaria can serve much the same purpose as Syria.

If you want to drive the Ottomans out of Europe, Bulgaria is a great tool to use.

With the Ottoman Balkans divided evenly between Byzantium and Bulgaria, using these vassals to reclaim the entire country can help you drive the Turks out of Europe in just a few wars!

In addition, Bulgaria has unique national ideas, a few unique missions and starts with a great project (the Rila monasteries) in Konstendil province. Kosovo’s gold mine is also nearby and ripe for capture. Not too shabby of a nation to play.

Restoring the First Bulgarian Empire can be a fun challenge!

5. Kazakh

Kazakh, not to be confused with the Kazan Tatar horde to the west, earns its spot on the list for its ability as a vassal.

With generic Horde ideas and a similar baseline to neighboring Horde nations, releasing Kazakh to play as them isn’t all that tempting.

However, what is tempting is to release them as vassals to conquer Central Asia!

With 26 provinces and almost 130 developments, you have a lot of work to do. Giving them all that land back will also massively boost their loyalty to you, making them unlikely to rebel at any time.

Kazakh is an excellent vassal, especially in Russian campaigns.

You can use it as your first choice when you want to pacify the steppes but don’t want to directly control them yourself.

4. Gascony

Gascogne is your best friend when playing in Western Europe like everyone else except the French.

Why is that?

Well, their purpose in your campaigns will be one and only:

Destroy the baguettes!

Of course, if you want a unique experience in a French start, choosing Gascogne to play is always an option. Lots of development and a prime position to colonize will do wonders for your early game options.

However, as mentioned above, Gascony serves a much greater purpose. Just release them in a province as vassals and fall for the French. This can be stacked with other unlockable French duchies like Champagne and Toulouse for maximum effectiveness.

3. Asturias/Leon

Asturias and León go hand in hand in this double entry.

While León has slightly more ideation and development, Asturias has a unique performance.

Like most unlockable nation achievements, this one can be overshadowed by Asturias releasing and feeding the necessary late-game provinces, annexing them and then releasing them and choosing to play as them.

The reason these two nations are on the list is because of their national ideas and their position on the map. They both get a free colonist from their ideas, which is a pretty big deal. Not many nations have this luxury!

If you are bored playing as the OG Iberian colonizers, you can always try these two. Just make sure you weaken Castile before letting go or you’ll find yourself looking over your shoulder all the time.

Even if you’re playing as a nation outside of Iberia, it’s always worth releasing Asturias and León as vassals when conquering Iberia.

Even if they don’t have ideas for exploration and expansion (the AI will never choose them as vassals), they will put their free colonist to good use.

2. Smolensk and the Ruthenian Principalities

Smolensk begins the game integrated into the Grand Duchy of Lithuania along with the other Russian principalities in Ruthenia and Belarus.

All of these nations have fairly similar starting positions and similar sets of ideas. Ultimately, your goal will be to unite Ruthenia and take control of all of Eastern Europe.

They can also be used to efficiently expand into Ruthenia. Picking one or two of them and supplying them with the Ruthenian lands is a great way to save on government capacity and aggressive expansion.

However, some of these principalities are more interesting than the others. While Galicia-Volhynia is the most developed and Kyiv controls the original Rus’ capital, the two principalities that stand out are Smolensk and Zaporozhie.

Zaporozhie’s unique horde-like government is discussed in detail in our list of the best horde nations. You are an excellent choice for a unique campaign unlike any other involving Christian nations!

Smolensk is the most unique because of its national ideas. In case you haven’t noticed, the Smolensk flag is a cannon. Oh boy if that isn’t fitting enough! Smolensk’s national brainchild is all about artillery.

Seriously, Napoleon would have been proud.

Cheaper artillery (20% cheaper, borderline broken), a large bonus to land fire damage and artillery combat ability, and increased siege ability. These ideas are a late game powerhouse.

Add to all this some idea groups like quality and quantity and you have the only nation in the game that can field pure artillery armies and has a chance to win battles!

Maybe Portugal can do that too, but don’t believe me.

1. Nitra

Nitra gets the first place because it combines a little bit of everything.

It can be used to expand into Hungary, but not to the same extent as other nations on this list. Not the worst option, don’t get me wrong, but nothing exceptional.

What sets Nitra apart among the unlockable nations is its unique performance that encourages having an actual campaign with them.

Of course, the Great Moravia achievement can be cheesed just like any other similar achievement.

However, in the case of Nitra, I strongly encourage running the campaign yourself. It’s one of the most entertaining mini-campaigns I’ve had at EUIV.

Starting as Nitra in 1444 you have decent development; low enough to join the HRE. You start out in control of one gold mine and have access to three others that are relatively close together (Inntal, Cheb, Kosovo).

They have unique national ideas, Slovak ideas. A great set of ideas with two traditions that can help you win close early wars.

Infantry fighting ability and fortress defense can be life saving especially in your mountainous terrain.

The rest of the set complements infantry fans with economic and other military bonuses.

Even if you don’t have a mission tree, if you want to continue the campaign after completing the unique achievement, you can always move on to founding another nation for extra flavor.
