The Last of Us Part 1 video compares the horseback riding scene from the PS4 version to the PS5 remake

It may be hard for some to believe The last of us is almost a decade old and was released in 2013 for PlayStation 3 and the following year for PlayStation 4. While the PS4 version arguably still holds up pretty well after eight years, the upcoming one is The Last of Us Part 1 lets it take full advantage of the PlayStation 5’s upgraded hardware.

The Last of Us Part 1 is due out on PS5 in September, but Naughty Dog recently gave fans a sneak peek at the upcoming remake. The developer tweeted a short video showing a comparison of the same scene in the PS4 and PS5 versions. And while Twitter’s video compression makes some of the graphical changes harder to see, some improvements stand out.

TIED TOGETHER: Avengers: Endgame Directors consider The Last of Us 2 to be one of the best games of all time

The scene in question shows the protagonist Joel on horseback following and talking to another character in front of him. One of the first changes to notice The Last of Us Part 1 are the animations. The PS4 version of Joel sits rigidly on his horse’s back, his right arm held away from his body. Meanwhile, in the PS5 remake, his posture is much more relaxed and his body hops with the horse’s gallop in a way that looks much more fluid and natural.

The lighting has also been revised, creating a much clearer contrast between light and shadow. In addition, the developers seem to have adjusted the color palette of the scene and muted some of the greens in a much more photorealistic way. Viewers will also note that the developers of the remake modeled the foliage in much more detail, particularly on the grass that lies on either side of the road. While Twitter is not the ideal platform for sharing HD videos, The Last of Us Part 1 still looks like a real improvement over the PS4 version of the game.

Of course, while these differences are noticeable if you take the time to look for them, it’s debatable how much these graphical improvements add meaningfully to the game. Last month, an animator for developer Naughty Dog denied allegations made by some fans The Last of Us Part 1 was just a money grab. And while the developer’s care and attention to detail is evident in today’s video, better lighting and smoother animations may not be enough to convince everyone The last of us worth a second purchase.

Still, Naughty Dog promised that The Last of Us Part 1 would feature improved gameplay in addition to the audiovisual improvements. As such, it may be worth withholding judgment until the game is over. Either way, the remake offers some good news for PC gamers The last of us is finally coming to PC after almost a decade of PlayStation exclusivity.

The Last of Us Part 1 will be released on September 2, 2022 for PS5. A PC port is also under development.
