Yes, despite everything, Ubisoft is still working on Beyond Good and Evil 2

“Beyond Good and Evil 2” is still absolutely, definitely, definitely in development, Ubisoft recently emphasized after some bad news for the company.

Ubisoft doesn’t seem to be in the best of shape right now, at least based on the rate at which games are being canceled. Four titles were canceled last year, including a Ghost Recon game, and just last week three more were canceled and Skull and Bones was postponed for the umpteenth time. So you might think that a game notorious for taking a long time in development, Beyond Good and Evil 2, would also end up on the cutting room floor. It turns out, no, it’s still being worked on despite everything.

In a statement to Eurogamer, a Ubisoft spokesperson said: “Development of Beyond Good and Evil 2 is ongoing and the team is working hard to deliver on their ambitious promise.” A bit lacking in detail, but hey, for those of you out there desperate for this game to be released, at least you can hang on to it a little bit longer.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 was first revealed in 2008 before essentially disappearing from the face of the earth until Ubisoft unveiled it again in a slick CGI trailer in 2017. Since then, some gameplay has been shown, but the game has been mired in several cases of controversy.

For one, Ubisoft hired Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s company HitFilm to get a number of artists to work for free, to which he responded to criticism by saying that paying everyone for their work was “unsustainable”. Worse, a 2020 report claimed that series creator Michel Ancel, who worked on the sequel but eventually left the industry altogether, may be abusive in his managerial style. All in all, the cards aren’t stacked in favor of this particular game, so we’ll have to wait and see what comes of it.
